Elle Marja é uma jovem pastora de renas que pertence à etnia sámi (etnia fino-úgrica que habita a região da Lapônia). Após ser exposta ao racismo dos anos 30 e aos exames biológicos realizados no colégio interno, ela sonha com uma vida longe de sua cidade e de sua herança étnica. Para iniciar essa nova etapa, ela precisa se tornar outra pessoa e romper os laços com sua família e cultura. Sami Blood é o primeiro longa-metragem da cineasta Amanda Kernell, ela mesma de origem sámi.
